DIRECTIONS TO THE SCHOOLS

The Gillespie County Country Schools Trail
(inaugurated on Saturday, April 1, 2006)

These directions can be used with any map of Gillespie County or the special country schools map available at the Fredericksburg Visitor's Center located at 302 E. Austin Street. You can also create your own route by following the general directions below.

Downtown Only (2 schools - 1 hour)

Vereins Kirche Community Church (#1 - a replica), 112 W Main St., and White Oak School (#17) (Pioneer Museum) are located at Marketplatz (Market Square), 325 W. Main. Wrede School (#2), is located at 3828 S. St. Highway 16. Drive 3.8 miles on St. Hwy. 16 S. (South Adams St.). Turn right.

Route A (4 schools - 2½ to 3½ hours)

Take 290W from Market Square. At the “Y”, keep right and follow US 87N. Turn right and follow Cherry Mountain Loop. Cherry Mountain School (#16) is on the right. Continue on Cherry Mountain Loop to US 87N, turn right, and almost immediately turn left onto Old Mason Rd. Turn right onto Pecan Creek Road. Stay to the right at the “Y”. Pecan Creek School (#15) is on the right. Returning to US 87N, turn left and go to RR 2323. Turn right. Follow RR 2323 to Cherry Spring School (#14), on the left. Continue on RR 2323, take a right, and follow Keese-Sagebiel Rd., Keese Rd., and Welgehausen Rd. Take a right and follow FM 965. At the bridge, take a left onto Lower Crabapple Rd. Crabapple School (#13) is on the right. Return to FM 965, take a left, and return to Fredericksburg.

Route B (4 schools - 2 to 3 hours)
(Suitable for bicycles)

From Market Square, take US 290E for one block. Turn left onto Hwy. 16 N to RR 1323. Take a right and follow to Willow City School (#12) on the left. Continue on RR 1323 to RR 1631. Take a right and follow it to North Grape Creek Rd. Take a left and follow to Rheingold School Rd. Take a right. Rheingold School (#10) is on right. Return to North Grape Creek Rd. Continue to Nebgen School (#9) on the left. Note that the North Grape Creek Rd. zigzags. Continue on North Grape Creek Rd. Take a right onto RR 2721 to Cave Creek Rd. Take a right. Follow the road to Cave Creek School Rd. Cave Creek School (#11) is on the left. Continue on Cave Creek Road to RR 1631. Take a left and return to Fredericksburg.

Route C (4 schools - 1½ to 2 hours)
(Suitable for bicycles)

From Market Square, take 290E to US 87S. Turn right at the Nimitz Museum. Turn left onto to Meusebach Creek Rd. Turn left onto Kuhlmann Rd. Meusebach Creek School (#3) is on the left. Return to Meusebach Creek Rd. Take a left and follow it to Old San Antonio Rd. Take a right and follow the road to Grapetown. Turn left. Grapetown School (#4) is on the left. Return to Old San Antonio Rd. Take a right onto Grapetown Rd. and follow it to RR 1376. Take a right. Turn left onto Luckenbach Rd. Luckenbach School (#5) is on the left. Continue on Luckenbach Rd. to US 290. Take a right. Lower South Grape Creek School (#6) is on the right. Return to Fredericksburg on US 290W.

Route D (3 schools - 1½ to 2 hours)

Take US 290E to Lower South Grape Creek School (#6) on the right. Continue on 290E, taking a left onto Ranch Road 1. Take a left onto Park Road 49, crossing the Pedernales River. Junction School (#8) is on your left. Return to Ranch Road 1, take a right, take the first left onto Lower Albert Rd. Cross US 290 to RR 1623. Take a left. Williams Creek (Albert) School (#7) is on your left. Return on RR 1623 to US 290, taking a left to Fredericksburg.
